Understanding and Treating Self Injurious Behaviors

When most people think of self-harming, or self injurious behaviors, many are reminded of a main stereotype, that being teenagers who self-injures by cutting their skin for any of a multitude of reasons. It is also thought that those individuals do what they do as attention-seeking behavior, looking to gain sympathy from others. What most people observing from the outside do not realize however is that the habit of self-injury is a far cry from attention-seeking behavior, and can indicate that a person is suffering terribly, emotionally.
Occurring most frequently in adolescents and teens, as well as in autistic individuals of all ages, people suffering from depression, those with Borderline Personality Disorder and other stressors or anxiety-related  conditions, displays of self injurious behaviors should always be taken seriously. The presence of some type of mental, emotional or medical issue can easily be overlooked if parents automatically assume that their child is displaying the behaviors in search of attention, which is detrimental to diagnosis, and the therapeutic process.
Those who display self injurious behavior are not usually suicidal, or wishing to end their lives as it is also frequently believed, but are instead trying to cope with whatever emotional or mental pain they may be experiencing, in the best way they can. It is understood that through the act of causing injury to one’s self, the created pain draws attention away from other pain. There is a downside to this release however, and many who self-injure become embarrassed of their behaviors or the marks made to their bodies, and can develop lowered self-esteem.
Some of the different behaviors that are exhibited by self-injurers are not only cutting on the arms, legs and other easily hidden parts of the body, but frequently includes burning, bruising, scratching, hair pulling, abuse of drugs or alcohol, and even some forms of bulimia or anorexia. Sufferers with autism or other mental health or behavioral disorders may bang their heads,  or repeatedly hit themselves as a way to diffuse their stress, too.
Today there are a number of treatments available to help correct self injurious behaviors, as well as any underlying issues that may be attributing to them. Separation Anxiety Disorder in Children – A Brief Overview

Usually occurring between the ages of 7 months to eighteen months of age when babies first learn to differentiate strangers from familiar faces, mild separation anxiety can be a normal part of early childhood development. Although this can go on for some time, most children are usually well over their fears by the time they are 3 years old. When the symptoms of mild anxiety continue or worsen however, or they begin to interfere with continued normal development, separation anxiety disorder in children should be addressed by parents.
Since early anxiety usually dissipates before a child turns three, continued symptoms are usually found to be caused by some kind of traumatic happening early in the child’s life. This could be anything from moving to a new home, a hospital stay without the caretaker present, divorce or other emotional events .
Overprotective parents – or those with anxiety disorder themselves – can promote the development of separation anxiety disorder in children, too, and there is some thought that it may be inheritable. Symptoms are widely varied depending on the child, but typically include stomach aches, headaches, fear of going to school or sleeping alone at night, bed wetting, temper tantrums, social anxiety, not wanting to make friends, and so on.
Although it is a relatively small percentage of children (4-5%) who are still affected by the time they reach the 7 to 11 year point, and even fewer teenagers (1%) continue to exhibit symptoms, those who still do should be evaluated by a mental health professional. Separation anxiety disorder in children is a mental illness, one that is typically diagnosed by behavioral symptoms and interviewing of the child, but it must be distinguished from other underlying concerns or mental disorders before treatment can be discussed.
In most cases children do recover – either with psychotherapy, medication, or both – but that can only happen with professional diagnosis. Diagnosis made as early as possible is suggested, as children who begin therapy younger tend to have better, faster results than older children. Parents who feel their child may be experiencing separation anxiety are recommended to seek a child psychologist who can help.
The good news is that most children and teens grow up to be perfectly normal, well-adjusted adults despite their initial troubles with separation anxiety. Some may experience occasional bouts from time to time throughout their lives, but in most instances separation anxiety disorder in children is usually only a temporary condition.

What Can Love and Logic Do for Your Family?

Have you felt your parenting has become the focus of others’ attention, i.e. family, friends, SOCIETY? As parents in the 21st century we experience a lot of pressure and take a lot of heat for our children’s behaviors, feelings, thoughts and personalities. It is, to say the least, an overwhelming experience to be a modern parent. The old ways of disciplining (spankings, belts, and paddles) are out, not to mention illegal in some cases, and the newer ways (time-outs and removal of privileges) have worn out their welcome and seem to have lost their effectiveness. What is a parent to do? No, really, what is a parent to do?
Luckily, there are many parenting books out there that have great information to help us navigate this unknown territory. And I am here to tell you, pretty much, they all say the same thing. However, I think the program that sums it up and packages it the best is the Love and Logic program by Jim and Charles Fay, a father and son team from Denver, Colorado.
Love and Logic’s premise is to help parents build skills for raising their children to be responsible, thinking, caring creatures who won’t suck the life out of society. The ingredients are in the title: Love and Logic. Through Love we develop a solid relationship with our children, filled with warmth, understanding and most importantly, EMPATHY. Yes! This is the first and foremost ingredient in the Love and Logic parenting recipe. Let’s reflect quickly on this idea because it’s not one we have heard of in, well, ever. Empathy can be described as showing an understanding of another’s experience and feelings about this experience without “saving” said person from the experience or feelings. Empathy leads to our children viewing us as people who care and whom they can feel safe and depend on. Spankings, belts, paddles, time-outs, and removal of privileges, have not historically come with an EMPATHY component. They have encouraged parents to wield power over their children and teach children to do or not to do things out of fear…of all kinds. Love and Logic suggests that we can’t even begin to discipline our children effectively if we haven’t created a solid relationship with them. We need to build that relationship with empathy so that our children feel connected and safe to make decisions. This leads to the next part, Logic.
Children are going to make decisions, let’s hope. We want them to learn to make good decisions right? We want them to learn to think and use Logic to solve problems and attain their goals and dreams. Do we want to thwart their own power to choose or do we want them to get lots of practice with this power before they are released into society without the safety net of parents and home? Love and Logic suggests the former. We want our kids to be well-equipped to safely, respectfully and responsibly handle whatever problems come their way. The aforementioned old ways of discipline also have not carried this component of LOGIC. Again, using our power of physical punishment or isolating children into time-out tends to lead a child to think, “It’s me versus them” rather than, “I receive this consequence because of my behavior.” Logically, the connection between behavior and consequence has not been made in a meaningful way because the consequence does not relate to the misbehavior. Logic suggests we use realistic and enforceable experiences to encourage our children to realize their behavior has an impact on others, their environment and themselves and that when a person’s behavior impacts the world in this way, that person is held accountable in a meaningful, but not punitive way pitting parent versus child.
Love and Logic can help you build a relationship with your child that you both can feel good about. It makes sense, it allows you to avoid being the “bad guy”, and encourages your child to take responsibility for him or herself. In the future, I will explore in greater detail, the ingredients of Love and Logic and how Love and Logic works for children of different ages and children with different needs. I urge you to consider how great it will feel to raise your children in a way that makes you feel good each night and builds the foundation for a lifelong positive relationship with your child.

Substance Use by College Students: The Role of Intrinsic Versus Extrinsic Motivation for Athletic Involvement

Certain types of athletic involvement may confer risk for substance use by college students. This study investigated whether motivational factors play a role in the relationship between athletic involvement and substance use. Intercollegiate athletes (n=98) and exercisers (n=120) were surveyed about substance use and motivation for athletic involvement. Athletes and exercisers who were extrinsically motivated had significantly higher rates of alcohol use than their intrinsically motivated counterparts. Results suggest that college students who are extrinsically motivated for involvement in physical activity/athletics–particularly those involved in team sports–may be in need of targeted prevention efforts.

How to be happy: Some tips for cultivating contentment

Happiness just doesn’t happen to us. Happiness or what I like to call contentment is something that we have to cultivate and make happen.

In my line of work one of the most frequent comments I hear is “Doc I’m just not happy with my life.”

Through my work with thousands of individuals and couples I have learned that happiness can be elusive but contentment is not if you follow these simple steps.

1. Live in the moment

Focus on what is happening in the moment. If something, in the moment, is stressing you out then think about your choices. Are you able to change anything about what is happening? If yes, then what choices can you make that would have the best outcome for you and those you love. Make the choice and let it go. If no, then ride out the situation and go with the flow. Worry and despair about things you can’t change can make your day miserable if you let it.

2. Express Gratitude

Every day I practice giving thanks for what I have in my life. The loved ones in my life and good health are just several examples. I also practice gratitude when I am paying my bills. Sounds strange? Think about this. There are some people who have lost their jobs and aren’t able to pay their bills. Some people have had medical emergencies and aren’t able to work and lost their jobs and homes. I am grateful for everything that comes my way in life.

3. Accept Responsibility

Every day I hear people say something like, “well my husband did this to me so I’m miserable.” My response would be why are you giving another person power over how you feel. Recognize and validate your feelings and concentrate on what choices you can make to feel better. Each of us is empowered to make choices that can send us down a positive path or a negative path. When you find yourself pointing your finger at another person, point it back at yourself, and uncover what your responsibility is in the moment. Make sure you make the right choices for you. You can do whatever you want but recognize that every choice you make has consequences.

4. Recognize its your choice

Every day we are faced with choices that can affect us in positive ways or negative ways. When something bad happens we can choose to focus on the negative and spin out of control or we can choose to focus on the choices we do have. Try to practice Love and Logic with yourself. Meaning, don’t beat yourself up or judge yourself for whatever has happened, but recognize you are a flawed person. We all are flawed and we learn from our mistakes or from the difficult times we have. Practice loving yourself, being kind to yourself, and logically think about the choices you have. Remember the choices you make will affect your behavior, your mood, and possibly the rest of your life. Wonderful thing is that we actually have choices.

5. Cultivate Optimism

Consciously work on developing a habit of seeing the positive side of things. Please don’t let the negatives color your whole outlook on life. Remember to accept responsibility for your feelings and cultivating optimism will certainly do that. When bad things do happen in your life think about what you learned from this situation, instead of how horrible things are, accept responsibility and move on. If you are not optimistic by nature then it may take you some time to practice changing your pessimistic thinking. Be conscious and recognize the negative thoughts as you are having them. Remember you are the director of your life and you can do anything that you put your energy into.

Remember contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want. It is the realization of how much you already have.
